Album Review: The Great Game (Self-Titled)

the great game

the great game

The Great Game’s SoundCloud page says they are World music, but not really World music, but who the heck cares what genre they are. This music is deliciously eclectic! Rich and layered with instrumentation and beats that make you want to move. And the vocals are such fun, ever changing from smooth and lustful to screaming and arena worthy.

It’s like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Linkin Park and the Pet Shop Boys had a baby. And maybe a mariachi band was the babysitter. Dear lord, so much going on in my ears! It’s hard to identify each piece, but the puzzle they create is beautifully intricate. I’ve never heard anything like this. Just when you think you know where the song is going it takes you to a place you hadn’t even considered. Maybe this is World music, because it takes you on a journey like no other.

Each track is unique yet stamped with their sound. The song “Bipolaroid” has some seriously sick solos. “Hungarian Dream” is triumphant, blending what could be a popular melody on the radio with arrangements of brass that lovingly challenge your ear. And my ear is eating it up.

The best part of this music is that it’s available as a FREE download at www.the-great-game.com. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments!
